Statement of the Religious Authority Office at the Institution of the Religious Authority, Sayyed Muhammad Hussein Fadlallah (ra), regarding the Beginning of the Blessed Month of Shawwal 1447 AH.
The new crescent of the month of Shawwal for the year 1447 AH (central conjunction) will be born on Thursday, the nineteenth of March for the year 2026 AD. The birth will occur at 01:23 a.m. (before dawn on Thursday) GMT, which is 03:23 a.m. (before dawn on Thursday) according to the winter time of the city of Beirut.
As noted in the attached image, sighting the new crescent (the crescent of Shawwal) is possible with the naked eye on Thursday evening (the night of Friday) in regions of the southern part of North America, and subject to clear skies and observer expertise, as in the northern part of South America and Central America extending to northwest Africa and western part of Europe. Sighting is also possible with the armed eye in vast regions of North Africa, Europe, and the western part of Asia.
Given that Thursday is the thirtieth day of the month of Ramadan, in addition to what is mentioned above, Friday will be the first day of the month of Shawwal 1447 (Eid al-Fitr), may Allah bring it back to all with goodness, blessings, and prosperity.
This is according to the jurisprudential opinion of his Eminence, the Religious Authority, Sayyed Muhammad Hussein Fadlullah (ra). He views that the month begins if it is possible to sight the crescent in any region of the world, provided we share with it a part of the night. This is without a difference between sighting with the naked eye and with the armed eye. There is also no difference in the beginning of the month of Shawwal between the eastern and western regions.
