The “Blessings” in the Quranic Conception

The “Blessings” in the Quranic Conception

In the Holy verses, the term “Blessed” occurs several times to describe the Quran. Much controversy arose on the nature of such blessing. Is it concrete and subjected to the rule of cause and effect? Does it lead to prosperity and materialistic benefit? This came in the interpretation of the following Ayah: "And He has made me blessed wherever I am." Surah Maryam (19:31) This means a benefit to the people. Or is it moralistic and spiritual? Does it open up to man’s spiritual aspect through the abundant graces of kindness and mercy? This is as mentioned in the Ayah which entails the conversation between Ibrahim and the angels: "The grace of Allah and His blessings upon you, people of the house." Surah Hud (11:73)

This explicitly signifies that Allah bestows abundant blessings on life and His servants. These are both materialistic and moral. They provide the graces necessary for the continuity and progress of life. They satisfy pleasure and desires. This endows people with joy, clarity, purity, tranquility, and serenity. It makes them worthy of Allah’s satisfaction and pleasure.

Still, a question keeps coming up. Do the divine blessings that Allah bestows upon man surpass the natural causes and laws? If Allah wants to increase one’s sustenance, does He do so without the need for the causes of sustenance? Or does it take place through those causes? This would mean Allah employs those causes to perform their role. They produce good for man in a way that conforms with his bodily and moral needs. It realizes his goals without any state of corruption or loss.

Allah’s interference in the course of blessings does not cancel these causes. It does not annul their impact. They constitute a part of the Divine law He set in this world. This law governs the movement and existence of things. Rather, His interference empowers these causes and reinvigorates them. In certain cases, it provides them with hidden potentials. The writer of “Al-Mizan”, Sayyed Muhammad Hussein Tabataba’i, says that the impact of Allah’s interference conforms with the very nature of things. It does not lead to any contradiction or cancellation of any law.

Allah, the Most Exalted, is the Ultimate Guardian of all things. He is the One Who takes care of them. He makes them grow and prosper, be they moral or materialistic. Thus, the blessing is one of the features of Allah’s mercy and kindness. It is a means through which He takes care of the human reality. This reality is one of the reflections of His godliness over the entire universe. He is the One capable of making them come true. This can be by the natural causes or others, according to His wisdom. It is according to His way of assessing matters and watching over man and life.
