Statement of the Religious Authority Office at the Institution of the Religious Authority, Sayyed Muhammad Hussein Fadlallah (ra), regarding the Beginning of the Blessed Month of Zoul-Hejjah 1447 AH.
The new crescent of the month of Zoul-Hejjah for the year 1447 AH (central conjunction) will be born on Saturday, the sixteenth of the month of May for the year 2026 AD. The birth will occur at 08:01 p.m. GMT, which is 11:01 p.m. according to the summer time of the city of Beirut.
As noted in the above mentioned picture, sighting the new crescent (the crescent of Zoul-Hejjah) is not possible except in regions with which we do not share a part of the night. Therefore, Sunday, May 17, 2026, will complete the thirty days of the month of Zoul-Qi'da, and Monday, May 18, 2026, will be the first day of the month of Zoul-Hejjah 1447 AH. Consequently, the Day of Arafah will be on May 26, 2026, and the Blessed Day of Eid al-Adha will be on May 27, 2026.
This is due to completing the count of the previous month and according to the jurisprudential opinion of his Eminence, the Religious Authority, Sayyed Muhammad Hussein Fadlallah (ra), who views that the month begins if it is possible to sight the crescent in any region of the world, provided we share with it a part of the night, without difference between sighting with the naked eye and with the armed eye.
(It is noted that regions which share a part of the night with the sighting regions will have the beginning of the month of Zoul-Hejjah on Sunday, May 17, 2026).
It is worth noting that the crescent can be sighted on Sunday evening (the night of Monday) with the naked eye easily, or subject to clear skies and observer expertise, or with the armed eye in most regions of the world.
We ask Allah the Exalted to bless the pilgrims and those performing Umrah, to accept their deeds, to grant us relief, and to support Islam and the Muslims against the enemies of the nation and the enemies of humanity, for He is the Most Merciful of the merciful.
