The Significance of Words in Exhortation and Education

The Significance of Words in Exhortation and Education

Allah says in His Holy Book:

"And [mention, O Muhammad], when Luqman said to his son while he was instructing him, 'O my son, do not associate [anything] with Allah. Indeed, association [with Him] is great injustice.'" Surah Luqman (31:13)

"And We have enjoined upon man [care] for his parents. His mother carried him, [increasing her] in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years. Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the [final] destination." Surah Luqman (31:14)

"But if they endeavor to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them but accompany them in [this] world with appropriate kindness and follow the way of those who turn back to Me [in repentance]. Then to Me will be your return, and I will inform you about what you used to do." Surah Luqman (31:15)

"[And Luqman said], 'O my son, indeed if wrong should be the weight of a mustard seed and should be within a rock or [anywhere] in the heavens or in the earth, Allah will bring it forth. Indeed, Allah is Subtle and Acquainted.'" Surah Luqman (31:16)

"O my son, establish prayer, enjoin what is right, forbid what is wrong, and be patient over what befalls you. Indeed, [all] that is of the matters [requiring] determination." Surah Luqman (31:17)

"And do not turn your cheek [in contempt] toward people and do not walk through the earth exultantly. Indeed, Allah does not like everyone self-deluded and boastful." Surah Luqman (31:18)

"And be moderate in your pace and lower your voice; indeed, the most disagreeable of sounds is the voice of donkeys." Surah Luqman (31:19)

"Do you not see that Allah has made subject to you whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth and amply bestowed upon you His favors, [both] apparent and unapparent? But of the people is he who disputes about Allah without knowledge or guidance or an enlightening Book [from Him]." Surah Luqman (31:20)

In the light of what has been mentioned in the Holy Quran in which Prophet Luqman (a.s.) is preaching his son, how important is education in terms of guidance, support, and advice?

We tend to view the issue of education as being influenced by several factors—whether intellectual, emotional, or pertaining to one’s environment. Accordingly, the most appropriate means of delivering a message is the word, which constitutes the medium of communication among men. In addition, it undertakes a vital role when it comes to exhortation because of all the intellectual, spiritual, and practical dimensions it covers. Through history, words have always been endowed with figurative meanings which suggest more than one meaning beneath the surface level of meaning.

Thus, words have always been divine means of exhortation through the messages sent by God and preached by His messengers. We notice how, historically speaking, words have affected the act of exhortation—sometimes positively, and other times negatively.

In accordance with what was mentioned, we continue to discuss the words of exhortation mentioned in the Quran which were used by Prophet Luqman (a.s.) while preaching his son. The words of exhortation are meant to expand his horizons on issues related to creed and life. In addition, we notice that the word “exhort” itself relates to the senses and perception as well. Ideas and concepts are not rigid, but rather lively and relate to man’s conscience.
