The Juristic Office of the Institution of His Eminence, the late Religious Authority, Sayyed Muhammad Hussein Fadlallah (ra), issued a statement concerning the beginning of the month of Shawal, 1446H. Following is the text of the statement:
The new crescent (central conjunction) for the month of Shawal, 1446H will be born on Saturday, March 29 at 10:58 AM (GMT), that is 12: 58 PM Beirut time.
As observed in the attached image, the crescent moon can be seen with the naked eye on Saturday evening (Sunday night) in western North American regions (Canada), and with armed eye in most of North and Central America. On Sunday evening (Monday night), the crescent can be seen with the naked eye, and easily in most parts of the world. Since the crescent can be seen on Saturday night in regions we share a part of night with, then next Sunday is the first day of Shawal 1446 (Eid al-Fitr) in all parts of that share a part of the night with the sighting regions.
As for the regions in the Far East that do not share a part of the night with the sighting regions the Eid is on Monday, March 31, according to the jurisprudential opinion of His Eminence the late Religious Authority, Sayyed Muhammad Hussein Fadlullah (ra) who deems it enough to sight the crescent, whether by the naked eye or by the aid of telescopes, in any region with which we share a part of the night.
We congratulate the Muslim Nation on the occasion of the Blessed Eid of Fitr. May Allah unite the believers in doing good and being pious and grant them victory and dignity. He is the Most Merciful.
