Life of Imam al-Askari (a.s.)
He is Abu Muhammad al-Hasan al-Askari, son of Ali al-Hadi, son of Muhammad al-Jawad, son of Ali al-Rida, son of Musa al-Kazim, son of Jafar al-Sadiq, son of Muhammad al-Baqir, son of Ali Zayn al-Abidin, son of al-Husayn, son of Ali ibn Abi Talib (a.s.).
Sheikh al-Mufid says that he was born in Medina. Some say he was born in Samarra, but the first view is more correct. His birth took place on Friday, the 8th of Rabi al-Thani. Other reports mention Monday the 4th, or the 10th, or even the month of Rabi al-Awwal. The year was either 231 or 232 AH.
Al-Masudi, in his book Ithbat al-Wasiyyah, writes that his birth and upbringing were similar to those of his forefathers. When he was born, his father was sixteen years and a few months old. When his father traveled to Iraq, the Imam went with him. He was then four years and a few months old.
His mother was named Sawsan. Some sources say Hadith or Hudaytha, and others say Sulayl, which is the most accurate name. She was known as a righteous and pious woman.
Imam al-Askari (a.s.) died in Samarra on Friday, at the time of the dawn prayer. Other narrations say Wednesday or Sunday. The date was the 8th of Rabi al-Awwal, or according to some, the first day of that month, in the year 260 AH. He became ill at the start of that year and remained sick for eight days before he passed away.
He was either twenty-eight or twenty-nine years old when he died. He lived with his father for twenty-three years and a few months. After his father's death, he led the Imamate for five years and a few months. Other narrations say eight months and thirteen days, or six years. His time as Imam covered the last months of al-Mu'tazz's ruling, then the eleven-month-and-twenty-eight-day ruling of al-Muhtadi, and continued into the fifth year of al-Mu'tamid's ruling. He was buried in his house in Samarra, next to his father's grave.
