Birth of Imam al-Hasan al-Askari (a.s.)

8 Rabi' al-Thani
Birth of Imam al-Hasan al-Askari (a.s.)

Imam al-Hasan al-Askari (a.s.)

He is Abu Muhammad al-Hasan al-Askari ibn Ali al-Hadi ibn Muhammad al-Jawad ibn Ali al-Rida ibn Musa al-Kazim ibn Ja'far al-Sadiq ibn Muhammad al-Baqir ibn Ali Zein al-Abidin ibn al-Hussein ibn Ali ibn Abi Talib (a.s.).

His Birth: Sheikh al-Mufid said: He was born in Medina—though some say in Samarra, but the first is more correct—on Friday, the 8th of Rabi' al-Thani. Others say on Monday, the 4th of the same month; others say on the 10th; and others say in Rabi' al-Awwal, in the year 231 or 232 AH.

Al-Mas'udi said in Ithbat al-Wasiyyah: His birth and upbringing were like those of his fathers (a.s.). His father was sixteen years and a few months old at the time of his birth. He traveled to Iraq with his father when he was four years and a few months old.

His Mother: She was named Susan. Some say Hadith or Hudaitha, and others say Sallil—which is the most correct opinion. She was a righteous and knowledgeable woman.

His Departure: He passed away in Samarra on Friday at dawn—some say on Wednesday, and others say on Sunday—on the 8th of Rabi' al-Awwal, or on the first day of that month, in the year 260 AH. He fell ill at the beginning of the month and remained sick for eight days before he passed away.

He died at the age of 29 or 28. He lived with his father for 23 years and a few months, and after his father, his Imamate and succession lasted five years and a few months—some say eight months and thirteen days, and others say six years. This period included the remaining months of al-Mu'tazz's rule, then the rule of al-Muhtadi for 11 months and 28 days, and he passed away after five years of al-Mu'tamid's rule. He was buried in his house in Samarra, next to his father's grave.
