Sayyeda Fatimah al-Zahra (a.s.)
Her Birth: The Lady of the Women of the Worlds, Fatimah bint Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah (p.), was born on the 20th of Jumada al-Thani, in the eighth year before the Hijrah (corresponding to approximately 615 AD).
Al-Zahra in the House of Prophethood: She was the daughter of the Prophet (p.) who remained with him, and from her alone his lineage continued. As a child, she was aware of her responsibilities toward her father. She would comfort him, ease his burdens, and give him all her love and affection, until the Prophet (p.) said of her that she was "Umm Abiha" (the mother of her father).
In the House of Marriage: Although many companions asked the Prophet (p.) to marry Fatimah al-Zahra (a.s.), he would reply that he was waiting for Allah's command regarding her marriage. It has been narrated in a hadith: "Were it not for Ali, Fatimah would have no equal." This was not about equal lineage, for the Prophet had cousins, but rather about equality in intellect, spirituality, purity, and infallibility. When Ali (a.s.) came to propose to her, with no wealth to his name, the face of the Prophet brightened, and he accepted and married her to Ali ibn Abi Talib (a.s.). She was an example of a patient, sincere, and loyal woman. She shared with him the responsibilities of the home, and all the joys, hardships, and difficulties.
Her Oppressions: Fatimah al-Zahra (a.s.) suffered many oppressions after the death of her father. Narrations mention the attack on her home, the confiscation of Fadak, and that she died angry with those who wronged her, as the narrations state. Despite all of this, she remained strong, firm, and steadfast in her faith.
Her Worship: Fatimah al-Zahra (a.s.) would spend her nights in prayer and her days in fasting, humbly and devoutly standing before Allah. She was well-known among all people for her piety, humility, asceticism, and knowledge. She set an example in every way.
Her Departure: Sayyeda Fatimah al-Zahra (a.s.) passed away on the 13th of Jumada al-Awwal, in the year 11 AH, at the age of 18 years and 75 days, according to the famous narrations. She was buried in Medina. She had requested that she be buried at night, that her grave be leveled with the ground, and that its location be hidden from the people, as a protest against what had been done to her. There are multiple narrations regarding the location of her grave—some say she was buried in Al-Baqi' Cemetery, some say in her own house, and others say in the Blessed Rawdah.
