Sunday is the first day of Rabi’ al-Awwal 1447 A.H.

August 24, 2025

Statement from the Religious Affairs Office at the Institution of the Eminent Religious Authority, Sayyed Muhammad Hussein Fadlallah (ra), regarding the Beginning of the Month of Rabi’ al-Awwal 1447 A.H

The new crescent for the month of Rabi’ al-Awwal 1447 A.H. (central conjunction) will be born on Saturday, August 23, 2025, at 06:06 Universal Time, which corresponds to 09:06 Beirut summertime.

As shown in the above-mentioned image, sighting the crescent on Saturday evening (the eve of Sunday) is possible with the naked eye—provided the sky is clear and the observer is experienced—in the Pacific region, which consists of uninhabited areas. It is also possible with armed devices (such as telescopes) in most parts of South America and the southern regions of North America.

Thus, Sunday, August 24, 2025, will be the first day of the month of Rabi’ al-Awwal 1447 A.H for regions that share part of the night with the areas of crescent visibility.

This is based on the jurisprudential opinion of the late Sayyed Muhammad Hussein Fadlallah (ra), who held that the beginning of the month is established if the crescent can be sighted in any location in the world with which we share part of the night, regardless of whether the sighting is with the naked eye or with the armed one.

We ask Allah, the Most Exalted, to bring relief and victory, and to grant success in all that pleases Him. Indeed, He is the Most Merciful of the merciful.
